Sir Peter Cook
Sir Peter Cook is an inspirational figure, famed as an architect, educator and critic. He co-founded the RIBA Gold Medal winning Archigram collective who paved the way for the 'high-tech' movement and has held such eminent posts as the Director of the Institute of the Contemporary Arts and the Bartlett Chair of Architecture. He has formed a new design team called 'Crab' working on, among other things, the new municipal theatre in Verbania on the shores of Lake Maggiore. His design for the Kunsthaus, Graz was nominated for the Sterling Prize in 2004 and he received a knighthood in 2007 for services to architecture.
STORE STREET was conceived in 2006 through a conversation between Peter Cook and Paul Hyett on flight BA103 to Los Angeles.
It aims to be different from the usual architectural lecture scene in London. In particular it seeks to engage young architects - many from abroad - who want to be part of a chirpy form of salon, where all sorts of architects will come and talk to each other. There are brief presentations and even the odd 20 minutes of 'kiss-and-tell', but the key thing is the conversation between people - often from the same country but from different generations or persuasions.
We plan conversations regularly throughout the year; often impromptu guests are only known a few weeks before the event, but always play to a full house.
I will search out people from those other cities who have found their way to London. I will introduce the fact that surprising combinations of people have been cronies/ rivals/ secret supporters/ avoiding each other for years. - Peter Cook
